The Bleeding Edge: 9/5/2016

A new season is definitely upon us with a vengeance. This is the week of the seventeenth annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival; and those who visit this site regularly have already seen the summary of activities that will be taking place this month at the Center for New Music, beginning with the Deep Listening workshop this Wednesday. However, there is much for in store for the adventurous, beginning tonight and including a double bill from Outsound Presents. Here is a chronological account of the remaining options:

Monday, September 5, 8:30 p.m., Make Out Room: Today may be a holiday, but it is also the first Monday of the month. That means that the Monday Make-Out at the Make Out room will be held as usual with three hours of cutting-edge jazz and improvised music featuring Bay Area talents. Tonight will begin with a set of explorations by pianist Eric Glick Rieman. He will be followed by the Trouble Ensemble, a “chamber music combo” led by Andrew Jamieson at the keyboard. The other members of the group will be saxophonists Rent Romus and Joshua Marshall, guitarists Roger Kim and Jakob Pek, drummer Tim DeCillis, and Sharmi Basu on electronics. The final set will be taken by the neem duo of gabby fluke-mogul on violin and kelley kipperman on bass. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the music starts a half hour later. The Make Out Room is located at 3225 22nd Street in the Mission, near the southwest corner of Mission Street. The Make Out Room is a bar. That means that tickets are not sold, nor is there a cover charge. Nevertheless, a metaphorical hat is passed between sets; and all donations are accepted, not to mention welcome!

Tuesday, September 6, 8 p.m., El Rio: If the Make Out Room tends to favor the jazz side of the bleeding edge, El Rio, which is also in the Mission, is more on the progressive rock side of things. They will also host a three-set evening, beginning this time with the Canadian progressive rock group Diatessaron. They will be followed by the Oakland-based Grex duo of Karl Evangelista and Rei Scampavia, both of whom perform as both vocalists and percussionists. On this occasion they will be joined by Robert Lopez on drums. The final set will be taken by Reconnaissance Fly, whose members are Brett Carson on keyboards, Rich Lesnik on reeds, Polly Moller on flute and vocals, Larry The O on percussion, and Tim Walters on bass and electronics.

El Rio is a bar, community space, and garden. The address is 3158 Mission Street near the southwest corner of Cesar Chavez Street. There will be a cover charge of $7.

Thursday–Saturday, September 8–10, 8 p.m., and Sunday, September 11, 3 p.m., CounterPulse: ARA Ritual I is the latest project by Korean percussionist, dancer, and vocalist Dohee Lee. This will be a ritual theatrical performance featuring Korean music and dance and named after the goddess of tears, whose name translates as both “ocean” and “eye.” The full-evening work was created by Dohee Lee Puri Arts in collaboration with Adria Otte, Donald Swearingen, Ian Winters, and Amy Lam.

CounterPulse is located in the Tenderloin at 80 Turk Street. General admission for all performances will be $24.99 with a $19.99 rate for students and seniors. There is also a Buy One Give One rate of $29.99 under which your purchase covers a free ticket for someone else. Finally, there is a special Patron of the Arts level at $34.99. Tickets may be purchased in advance through a Secure Ticket Portal with hyperlinks for each of the four performances. For those wishing to purchase at the door, the Box Office opens 45 minutes before the performance begins.

Thursday, September 8, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: The first Outsound Presents concert of the week will be the next installment in the Luggage Store Creative Music Series. This will be a single-set evening of duo improvisations by Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino saxophones and Dan Robinson on drums. The Luggage Store Gallery is located at 1007 Market Street, across the street from where Golden Gate Avenue meets Taylor Street (which happens to be the site of the Golden Gate Theatre). As usual, admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.

Saturday, September 10, 9 p.m., The Royale: This is yet another neighborhood bar venue. It is located at the corner of Post Street and Leavenworth Street on one of the city’s oldest and densest residential blocks. There is always a local jazz band on hand in the corner of the space, but Gold Age is likely to be one of the site’s more adventurous offerings. Aram Shelton plays alto saxophone and bass clarinet with a rhythm section consisting of Mark Clifford on vibraphone, Safa Shokrai on bass, and Britt Ciampa on percussion. As is the case at the Make Out Room, there is no cover charge; so be prepared to be asked to donate.

Sunday, September 11, 7:30 p.m., The Musicians Union Hall: The second Outsound Presents offering of the week is one of the occasional SIMM (Static Illusion Methodical Madness) Series concerts. This will be a Showcase Series program celebrating the 25th anniversary of Edgetone Records. Jamieson will begin with his second gig of the week, this time playing solos from his Heard the Voice album. He will be followed by Noertker’s Moxie, let by Bill Noertker on bass and playing Noertker’s original compositions. The other performers will be Annelise Zamula on tenor saxophone and flute, Amber Lamprecht on oboe and flute, Theo Padouvas on cornet, and Jason Levis on drums. The Musicians Union Hall is located at 116 9th Street, near the corner of Mission Street. Admission is on a sliding scale between $10 and $15.
