The Bleeding Edge: 10/17/2016

This will be a busy week at the Center for New Music (C4NM), but that will be just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. For the second week in a row, Outsound Presents will be offering of “double header” on concerts in both the Luggage Store Creative (LSC) Music series and the Static Illusion Methodical Madness (SIMM) Series; and several more of the “usual suspects” will also be active. Beyond the previously announced C4NM events, specifics are as follows:

Wednesday, October 19, 7:30 p.m., Canessa Gallery: This will be the second of the two October shows presented in the Composers in Performance Series (the first having taken place at the beginning of the month). This will again be a two-set evening. In the first set guitarist Julia Miller and percussionist Andrea Centazzo will be performing music by Uruguayan composer Elbio Barilari. In the second set violinist gabby fluke-mogul will play her new compositions. The Canessa Gallery is located at 708 Montgomery Street, right on the “border” between the Financial District and North Beach. Admission will be between $10 and $20, payable at the door.

Wednesday, October 19, 8 p.m., Second Act: This is the October installment of the Monthly Experimental Music Showcase; and it will follow the usual four-set format. The main attraction will be Michael Gendreau, who specializes in working with the infrasonic vibrations of interior spaces. Other noise sets for the evening will be Dianne Lynn’s Nurse Betty and the duo of broken cello and microcircuits played by Angela Roberts and Scott Goff. Also high on the decibel metric will be the ’Fraid o’ Freyja trio of Edward Schocker on electric guitar, Suki O’Kane on drums, and Dylan Bolles on Wurlitzer electric organ with all pitches tuned in just intonation.

As usual, the entire program is expected to last about two hours; and doors will open at 7:45 p.m. Second Act is located in Haight-Ashbury at 1727 Haight Street, between Cole Street and Parker Avenue. Admission is only $5, but only those aged 21 or older may attend.

Thursday, October 20, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: This week’s LSC program has a title: Experimental Side of the Y2K International Live Looping Festival. There will be three sets of experimentation taken by Mikko Biffle, Matt Davignon, and the duo of Eluid Ernandes and Hideki Nakanishi. The Luggage Store Gallery is at 1007 Market Street, directly across from the Golden Gate Theatre at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Taylor Street. As always admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.

Friday, October 21, 7 p.m., Adobe Books: Now in a relatively new venue, Adobe Books is offering a monthly music series that begins early on a Friday, making it a perfect after-work site. There will be three sets over the course of three hours. The first set will be taken by OMMO, the electro-acoustic duo of Julie Moon and Adria Otte. They will be followed by a trio of trumpeter Tom Djll, often playing with electronic modification, electronic (as opposed to “electric”) guitarist Henry Kaiser, and saxophonist Aram Shelton. The final set will share the saxophone work of Bruce Ackley with the electronic imagination of Josh Bischoff. Both will take solos and then come together for a duo performance.

Adobe Books is now located at 3130 24th Street (still in the Mission). The gig is free. However, donations will go directly to the performing artists and are strongly encouraged. In addition, free refreshments will be provided for a book purchase of at least $6.

Sunday, October 23, 7:30 p.m., The Musicians Union Hall: The next SIMM Series concert will be in two sets. The opening set will be taken by the Bastet quartet of Justin Rock on guitar, Giulio Cetto on bass, Tim Lin on saxophone, and Mike Quiggs on drums. They will be followed by a set of compositions by Heikki Koskinen. Koskinen will play both e-trumpet and piano, leading an ensemble whose other members will be Karissa McKelvey (trumpet), Rob Ewing (trombone), Rent Romus (saxophones and flutes), Josh Marshall (tenor and soprano saxophone), John Vaughn (baritone saxophone), John Finkbeiner (guitar), Safa Shokrai (bass), and Donald Robinson (drums). The Musicians Union Hall is located at 116 9th Street, near the corner of Mission Street. Admission is on a sliding scale between $10 and $15.

Sunday, October 23, 9 p.m., Gray Area Art And Technology: The next installment in the UNSEEN series will feature the return of composer and video artist Andy Puls. He will be collaborating with Raub Roy, who will be performing under the name Scy1e. The program will also feature Danishta Rivero performing on her Hydrophonium, a water-based electro-acoustic percussion instrument.

Doors open at 8 p.m., but the performance will not begin until 9 p.m. A cash bar will be available for those aged 21 or older. Eventbrite has created an event page for advance purchase of tickets.
