This is a week that has benefitted from several advance notices. Most important is that the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players will be giving the first concert of its 46th season and will do so by trying out a new venue, the Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theatre in the Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, this coming Saturday. In addition, the October schedule for the Center for New Music was reviewed on this site at the end of last month. That leaves only a few other events for the coming week; but they should not be neglected, particularly since one of them is tonight:
Monday, October 3, 8:30 p.m., Make Out Room: Since today is the first Monday of the month, it is time for the next installment of the Monday Make-Out at the Make Out Room. As usual this will be a three-set evening, opening with Invisible Guy, an all-star bicoastal trio led by clarinetist Ben Goldberg (who comes pretty close to being bicoastal himself) playing with a rhythm section of Michael Coleman on piano and Hamir Atwal on drums. They will be followed by the Allen Lowe Ensemble, which is led by East Coast saxophonist Lowe, who is the composer for the group. He is joined by trumpeter Theo Padouvas and a rhythm section with strong West Coast connections consisting of Karl Evangelista on guitar, Max Judelson on bass, and Jason Levis on drums. The final set will feature Bay Area drum music by the Tim DeCillis Trio.
Doors open at 8 p.m., and the music starts a half hour later. The Make Out Room is located at 3225 22nd Street in the Mission, near the southwest corner of Mission Street. The Make Out Room is a bar. That means that tickets are not sold, nor is there a cover charge. Nevertheless, a metaphorical hat is passed between sets; and all donations are accepted, not to mention welcome!
Wednesday, October 5, 7:30 p.m., Canessa Gallery: This will be the first of two shows presented in the Composers in Performance Series this month. There will be two sets featuring the guitar. The first will be the Middle Grey duo of Anastasia Clarke and Jackson Randall, presenting works for processed electronics and guitar. They will be followed by the Andrew Weathers Ensemble, led by Weathers on both guitar and vocals. The other members are Aaron Oppenheim (bass, accordion, computer), Scott Siler (drums, vibraphone), and Blaine Todd (guitar, harmonica, vocals). In addition, “Water Organ,” a new sound installation by Cere Davis will be on display for the evening. The Canessa Gallery is located at 708 Montgomery Street, right on the “border” between the Financial District and North Beach. Admission will be between $5 and $15, payable at the door.
Thursday, October 6, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: The Luggage Store Creative (LSC) Music Series will begin the month with its usual format of two sets of free improvisation. The first set will present Dania Luck, performing as Person L and offering her latest efforts in using the Supercollider programming language. This will be followed by a group improvisation by kelley kipperman and gabby fluke-mogul, both of whom form the neem duo, along with Aurora Josephson and Kataryna Kopelevich. The Luggage Store Gallery is at 1007 Market Street, directly across from the Golden Gate Theatre at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Taylor Street. As with all LSC concerts, admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.
