The Bleeding Edge: 11/1/2016

As usual, activities at the Center for New Music (C4NM) have already been announced. The good news is that there are five additional events that deserve consideration. The bad news is that two of them will overlap (with a third taking place earlier on the same day), thus continuing the prevailing status quo that the weekend is a time of hard choices. Specifics are as follows:

Thursday, November 3, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: This week’s installment of the Luggage Store Creative (LSC) Music Series will continue last week’s format of two sets of small group improvisations. The first set will be taken by Portrait Maker, a group led by jazz guitarist Roger Kim that experiments with time and space:

They will be followed by a trio of Joshua Marshall on both tenor and soprano saxophones, Eli Wallace on keyboard, and Jon Bafus on drum-set. The Luggage Store Gallery is at 1007 Market Street, directly across from the Golden Gate Theatre at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Taylor Street. As with all LSC concerts, admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.

Sunday, November 6, 12:30 p.m., Little Boxes Theater: This will be the latest performance of Tom Bickley’s Cornelius Cardew Choir, which participated in the Acoustic Habitats program presented by the C4NM this past September. Rather than performing one of the “Paragraph” movements from Cardew’s The Great Learning, the choir will present a new work based on Canto XXXII from the Inferno section of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. This is the canto that the poet John Ciardi described as “the most pathetic and dramatic passage of the Inferno,” in which Count Ugolino is gnawing at the head of Archbishop Ruggieri. Kim Anno has adapted the text for recitation and will direct the performance, which will also include violinist Kristina Dutton performing music by Saulo Laudares. The Little Boxes Theatre is located at 1661 Tennessee Street, near where Third Street meets Cesar Chavez Street, a location where parking tends to be easy. There will be no charge for admission.

Sunday, November 6, 7:30 p.m., The Musicians Union Hall: This week Outsound Presents will also offer the next installment in the SIMM (Static Illusion Methodical Madness) Series of concerts. The first set will present composer Brett Carson’s group for playing his own music, Mysterious Descent. All the members of this group provide vocals and percussion work. Carson himself also plays piano. He is joined by David Katz, Nava Dunkelman, and Mia Bella D’Augelli, who adds violin to the mix. Mysterious Descent will be followed by a celebration of the ninth album by Noertker’s Moxie, druidh penumbrae. Noertker’s latest recorded compositions will be performed by Annelise Zamula on alto saxophone and flute, Wallace (giving his second Outsound performance this week) on piano, and Jason Levis on drums, with Noertker himself playing bass. The Musicians Union Hall is located at 116 9th Street, near the corner of Mission Street. Admission is on a sliding scale between $10 and $15.

Sunday, November 6, 9 p.m., The Lab: Stranded Records will present an evening with two major avant-garde musicians. Rhys Chatham is currently working on projects for orchestras of 100–200 electric guitars; but he also performs as a soloist on trumpet, flutes, and electric guitar processed by a battery of delays. Bill Orcutt’s work in the avant-garde tends to reflect his interest in rural blues.

The Lab is located in the Mission at 2948 16th Street. This is a short walk from the corner of Mission Street, where there is both a BART station and bus stops for both north-south and east-west travel. Admission will be $15 with a $10 charge for members of The Lab. Doors will open at 8 p.m.; and, since there is usually a large turnout for these events, early arrival and/or advance registration are highly recommended.

Monday, November 7, 8:30 p.m., Make Out Room: This will be the first Monday of the month, making it the evening for the next installment of the Monday Make-Out at the Make Out Room. The opening two sets will be taken by Wayne Grim’s Entartete Ensemble and the free improvisation Hare and Arrow trio of percussionists Mark Pino and Timothy Orr with Sung Kim on ozurki. However, the main attraction will be the Lingua Incognita Session, an open improvisation for large ensemble organized by Mika Pontecorvo and based on musical grammars used by Miles Davies in the recording of Bitches Brew and Ornette Coleman in working with his Prime Time group.

Doors open at 8 p.m., and the music starts a half hour later. The Make Out Room is located at 3225 22nd Street in the Mission, near the southwest corner of Mission Street. The Make Out Room is a bar. That means that tickets are not sold, nor is there a cover charge. Nevertheless, a metaphorical hat is passed between sets; and all donations are accepted, not to mention welcome!
