This is a week in which advance “news of coming attractions” will see fulfillment. The month is winding down to a close at the Center for New Music (C4NM); but the coming weekend will see multiple performances of Schick Machine at Z Space. In addition, violinist Kate Stenberg and pianist Sarah Cahill will be giving a duo recital on Saturday, which will feature Henry Cowell’s first sonata for violin and piano; and SFMusic Day - Live + Free will have a generous supply of offerings for the adventurous. Nevertheless, there are several events of interest prior to the weekend. Specifics are as follows:
Wednesday, September 21, 8 p.m., Second Act: The next installment of the Monthly Experimental Music Showcase will have the usual four-set format. The featured artist will be Matt Ingalls, founder and co-director of sfSound, presenting a solo set with reeds and electronics. There will also be a duo improvisation by Sheila Bosco and Collette McCaslin, now performing under the group name Alien Planet. Kevin CK Lo will present compositions for solo performance on flute, violin, and piano based on live stochastic synthesis. Finally, as a literal “blast from the past,” A Lucy Noise Project will feature a composition utilizing a “classic” Korg MS 10 synthesizer.
As usual, the entire program is expected to last about two hours; and doors will open at 7:45 p.m. Second Act is located in Haight-Ashbury at 1727 Haight Street, between Cole Street and Parker Avenue. Admission is only $5, but only those aged 21 or older may attend.
Thursday, September 22, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: This week’s installment of the Outsound Presents Luggage Store Creative (LSC) Music Series will begin with a soloist often associated with more traditional work. Christopher Whitley has been making a name for himself as the first violinists of the Thalea String Quartet; but, in December of 2014, he played a major role in Teleformation: a symbiosis of early and new musical styles and ideas, a program prepared by the Guerrilla Composers Guild and performed at C4NM. Outsound Presents will host him in a set of solo improvisations for violin and electronics. He will be followed by another string player, cellist Alex Catona, improvising with Travis Johns on electronics. The Luggage Store Gallery is at 1007 Market Street, directly across from the Golden Gate Theatre at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Taylor Street. As always admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.
Thursday, September 22, 9 p.m., Gray Area Art & Technology Theater: This is the latest installment in Gray Area’s UNSEEN series of site-specific collaborative performance by Bay Area artists. The series is curated by Matt Fisher and involves the use of an eight-channel surround sound system based on audio engineering by Recombinant Media Labs’ Alaric Burns. Participating artists for this performance will be Thomas Carnacki, Scott Arford, Fluorescent Grey, and Ray McClure.
The Gray Area Art & Technology Theater is located in the Mission at 2665 Mission Street. Admission is $13 at the door. Tickets purchased in advance are only $8. Doors open at 8 p.m., but the performance will not begin until 9 p.m. A cash bar will be available for those aged 21 or older. Ticketfly has created an event page for advance purchase of tickets.
