Several of the events for this week have already been accounted for in separate articles. These include the first performance this month at the Center for New Music, the latest installment in the sfSoundSalonSeries curated by Kyle Bruckman, as well as the two inaugural performances of the New Piano Collective in the Old First Concerts recital series at Old First Church. On the other hand this will be a “double header” week for Outsound Presents, with concerts in both the Luggage Store Creative Music Series and the SIMM (Static Illusion Methodical Madness) Series; and The Lab will be hosting a three-set evening. In chronological order, these events will be as follows:
Thursday, August 11, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: This will be the usual offering of two improvised sets. The opening set will be a solo synthesizer improvisation by Clarke Robinson. He will be followed by Andrew Jamieson’s Trouble Ensemble, a group that Jamieson leads from the keyboard. The other instrumentalists are violinist Mia Bella D’Augelli, saxophonists Joshua Marshall (tenor) and Rent Romus (alto), guitarist Roger Kim, and drummer Tim De Cillis, with Sharmi Basu adding his own electronics. The Luggage Store Gallery is located at 1007 Market Street, across the street from where Golden Gate Avenue meets Taylor Street (which happens to be the site of the Golden Gate Theatre). As usual, admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.
Saturday, August 13, 8:30 p.m., The Lab: This will be an evening of three sets of audiovisual immersion. Composer and intermedia artist from Oakland Marielle V Jakobsons will be celebrating the release by Thrill Jockey Records of her new album Star Core, her first recording in which she uses her voice. The album provides her interpretations of a selection of devotional hymns. Maggi Payne, Co-Director of the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College, will screen a selection her videos. The final set will combine the post-rock music of Phil Manley with video interpretations created by Andy Puls.
The Lab is located in the Mission at 2948 16th Street. This is a short walk from the corner of Mission Street, where there is both a BART station and bus stops for both north-south and east-west travel. Admission will be $15 and free of charge for members of The Lab. Doors will open at 8 p.m.; and, since there is usually a large turnout for these events, early arrival and/or advance registration are highly recommended.
Sunday, August 14, 7:30 p.m., The Musicians Union Hall: The Outsound Presents SIMM Series concert will be a two-set evening. In the first set vocalist Lorin Benedict will give a duo performance with percussionist Jason Levis. Levis will then return in the second set to perform with Noertker’s Moxie. Bassist Bill Noertker created and leads this group in the performance of his original compositions. The other members will be Annelise Zamula on tenor saxophone and Brett Carson on piano. The Musicians Union Hall is located at 116 9th Street, near the corner of Mission Street. Admission is on a sliding scale between $10 and $15.
