When John Murtha made his final pitch to the House of Representatives on the vote to override the Bush veto, he argued that the war in Iraq was damaging our overall military strength. His focus was on the draining of our Reserve forces. However, he could also have cited Gordon Lubold's report for The Christian Science Monitor on the decline in reenlistment figures. Of course, now that the veto has been sustained, arguing debating strategy is purely academic. Nevertheless, much of the Democratic rhetoric has been about Bush losing touch with reality, which makes Lubold's own particular reality check particularly apposite in the present context!
