Next month’s offering in the Concerts at the Cadillac series at the Cadillac Hotel will feature a visit by jazz vocalist Lavay Smith. Her concerts feature original songs of her own composition; but her repertoire also honors many of the great female jazz singers, such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae. (When you start making a list like that, you begin to feel guilty about omitting anyone!) Since 1989 she has been singing with a band she formed called the Red Hot Skillet Lickers. Two of that band’s members will be featured at Smith’s Cadillac gig, saxophonist Jules Broussard and trombonist Danny Armstrong. While the full band may not join her in the intimate space of the Cadillac Hotel, there is likely to be some kind of rhythm section for support.
Like all Concerts at the Cadillac events, this show will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will take place on Friday, October 14. The Cadillac Hotel is located at 380 Eddy Street, on the northeast corner of Leavenworth Street. The purpose of the Concerts at the Cadillac series is to provide high-quality music to the residents of the hotel and the Tenderloin District; but all are invited to visit the venue that calls itself “The House of Welcome Since 1907.”
