JIVE: Rosh Hashanah to Return to Century Club

JIVE musicians Simon Barrad, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, Ronny Michael Greenberg, and Elizabeth Castro Greenberg

This year the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the New Year in Judaism, will begin on the evening of Monday, September 22, and continue through the afternoon of Wednesday, September 24. Readers may recall that last year the JIVE (Jewish Innovative Voices and Experiences) quartet prepared a program entitled A Golden New Year. The membership of that quartet is still pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg, baritone Simon Barrad, countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, and violinist Elizabeth Castro Greenberg.

This year they will make a return visit to the Century Club of California for a new version of A Golden New Year. Most importantly, there will be a world premiere performance of “Anyos de Oro” (years of gold) with both music and lyrics by pianist Greenberg. The program will also include highlights from Suite Hébraïque by Canadian composer Srul Irving Glick. As was the case last year, there will be arrangements of traditional Yiddish and Sephardic songs. The performance will be followed by a dessert reception with traditional food provided by Saul’s Delicatessen: spiced apple sangria and “themed” cocktails.

Once again, the performance of A Golden New Year will take place prior to the beginning of Rosh Hashanah. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20. For those that do not yet know, the Century Club is located at 1355 Franklin Street, between Post Street and Sutter Street. General admission will be $100. Those aged 30 and under may purchase tickets for $60. Tickets may be purchased through an Eventbrite Web page.
