This week on the Bleeding Edge will be even busier than last week. The only event previously reported will be Alex Heigl’s recital at the Center for New Music on Saturday. That leaves a more than generous number of other listening opportunities, at least one of which is likely to be new to most readers. Specifics are as follows:
Tuesday, September 16, 7 p.m., Make-Out Room: As was the case last month, this month’s Jazz at the Make-Out Room will consist of two sets, both of which will involve performers familiar to many (if not most) readers. The opening set will be by the Song & Dance Trio with Cory Wright on saxophone performing with rhythm provided by guitarist Karl Evangelista and Jordan Glenn on Drums. This will be followed at 8:15 p.m. by another trio set, this time led by clarinetist Ben Goldberg accompanied by cellist Ben Davis and Tim Bulkley on drums. For those unfamiliar with the venue, it is located in the Mission at 3225 22nd Street.
Thursday, September 18, 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., and Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Black Cat Jazz Supper Club: This week the Club is hosting the Caelan Cardello Trio. Pianist Cardello will be leading his take on modern jazz. He will be joined by Dominick “Domo” Branch on drums and bassist Jonathon S. Muir-Cotton. The club is located at 400 Eddy Street on the northwest corner of Leavenworth Street.
Friday, September 19, 6 p.m. and 7:25 p.m., Mr. Tipple’s Jazz Club: Bassist Lisa Mezzacappa will lead a quartet performance. Tenor saxophonist Aaron Bennett will be on the front line, and she will be joined in the rhythm section by Mark Clifford on vibraphone and drummer Eric Garland. For those that do not yet know about this venue, Mr. Tipple’s is located at 39 Fell Street, on the south side of the street between Van Ness Avenue and Polk Street. Reservations for admission may be made through Web pages for the first and second sets. Both food and drink are available and may be purchased separately.
Friday, September 19, 7 p.m., Medicine for Nightmares: This will be the next Other Dimensions in Sound performance curated by reed player David Boyce. For this particular evening, Boyce will lead a trio with rhythm provided by Warren Huegel on drums and guitarist David James. As always, the venue is the bookstore located in the Mission at 3036 24th Street, between Treat Avenue and Harrison Street. There is no charge for admission, presumably to encourage visitors to consider buying a book.
Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, 7:30 p.m., Audium: This performance will mark the conclusion of the two-year residency at Audium by Red Clay Sound Haus. The title of the program will be The Sound of Black San Francisco. It has been described as “a performance that channels the voices of a disappearing city, preserving its cultural and historical memory through sound.” For those that do not already know, this performing space has 176 loudspeakers. It is located at 1616 Bush Street, and the price of admission will be anything between one and thirty dollars.
Saturday, September 20, 8 p.m., Birdhouse Gallery: This venue is an art gallery and multi-purpose community space in the Sunset District at 2548 Judah Street. Babbling at the Birdhouse will be a three-set evening. Vocalist David Israel Katz will give a duo performance with Jordan Glenn performing on his array of percussion instruments. Sound artist Julie Herndon will present a set in which she explores the body’s relationship to sound. There will also be a set by Matia E.A., who is both a sound and a visual artist.
Jennifer Choi with her violin (from her Spruce Street Concerts event page)
Sunday, September 21, 5 p.m.: Violinist Jennifer Choi will present a program entitled The Partita Project. The most familiar work on the program will be Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 1004 solo violin partita in D minor, best known for its conclusion with an extended Chaconne movement. The program will also include Missy Mazzoli’s “Dissolve, O My Heart,” which was inspired by that movement. The “project” will also include a solo partita by John Zorn. Admission will be $30 and information about the venue will be provided in response to an electronic mail request sent to harry@fullplatemedia.com.
