Mike Greensill at the piano performing with vocalist Gail Terminello and Carla Kaufman on bass (screen shot from the video of the program being discussed
Yesterday afternoon jazz pianist Mike Greensill presented his annual Old First Concerts (O1C) program at the Old First Presbyterian Church. This is usually a Labor Day event, but this year it took place a week later. This time the only other instrumentalist was Carla Kaufman on bass; and, as was the case last year, Gail Terminello joined the instrumentalists for vocal selections. As in the past, the program provided a balance of familiar standards and Greensill originals. This time one of those originals was a theme tune for a radio show he presented when he was living in Hong Kong.
Regular readers probably know that Greensill’s gigs have been an annual tradition at Old First Church. In the past his dedication to repertoire was engaging enough to rise above Terminello’s consistent difficulties with pitch. I missed last year’s gig, but this year felt like a disquieting nose dive from my 2023 encounter. Sometimes the strength of a tradition involves knowing when to stop and leave the past events as cherished memories.
