Having accounted for the two “pre-Gala” concerts taking place in Davies Symphony Hall (the first Orchestral Series performance with Garrick Ohlsson playing Johannes Brahms’ Opus 15, his first piano concerto, and the first Chamber Series program), this site can now turn to the specifics for the music to be performed at the Gala itself. The conductor will be Giancarlo Guerrero, who last visited the podium of the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) at the beginning of May of last year. The concerto soloist will be violinist Hilary Hahn, who performed under the baton of then Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen at the end of that same month of May.
The concert itself will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 24. Hahn’s concerto selection will be Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto composed in the key of E minor. The program will begin with “The Chairman Dances,” composed by John Adams, who probably can be declared the leading composer here in the Bay Area. The program will conclude with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s five-movement orchestral suite, his Opus 34 Capriccio espagnol. The evening will then conclude with “After Party Fun,” beginning at 8:30 p.m. This will be a one-hour event with a live DJ and cocktails available at the Orchestra level bar. As always, tickets may also be acquired at the Box Office, which is at the entrance to Davies on the south side of Grove Street, between Van Ness Avenue and Franklin Street.
