Because December is a quiet month at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), it is probably worth providing a heads-up for concert activities next month before readers get too preoccupied with seasonal obligations. There are only three of them as both students and faculty rev up for the intensity of the second semester. However, each has its own domain of interest that deserves consideration.
All events will take place in the SFCM building at 50 Oak Street, between Van Ness Avenue and Franklin Street, a short walk from the Van Ness Muni station. As always readers are encouraged to consult the Events Calendar at the SFCM Web site for the most up-to-date information about any of these offerings. The three January concerts will be as follows:
Friday, January 13, 8 p.m., Concert Hall: The next Orchestra concert will present winners from the concerto competitions held at the end of the last academic year. The first of these will be guitarist Ian Rowe (’16), playing Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Fantasia para un gentilhombre” (fantasia for a gentleman). Rodrigo wrote this piece for Andrés Segovia, who premiered it here in San Francisco on March 5, 1958, performing with the San Francisco Symphony under the baton of Enrique Jordá. The next competition winner will be pianist Yilin Liu (’17), playing Franz Liszt’s “Totentanz.” The program will then conclude with Won Lee (’16) playing Lowell Liebermann’s flute concerto. Scott Sandmeier will return to conduct this concert. As always, tickets will be $20 for general admission and $15 for students, seniors, and Conservatory members. Tickets may be purchased in advance online through a Click4tix event page.
Thursday, January 19, Concert Hall: The next recital to be given in conjunction with an Artist Residency will feature the Miró Quartet. These concerts usually involve SFCM students joining the visitors. However, neither the program nor word of any additional performers has yet been announced. Again, tickets will be $20 for general admission and $15 for students, seniors, and Conservatory members. Tickets may be purchased in advance online through a Click4tix event page.
Monday, January 23, Osher Salon: The next Faculty Artist Series concert will be organized by MaryClare Brzytwa. As Executive Director of New Music & Technology, Brzytwa is part of the Academic Administration, rather than the Faculty. However, she will be preparing a program featuring the work of those faculty members involved with the Technology and Applied Composition program. This program will be free, and no reservations will be required.
