“You can’t handle the truth!”

The full text of an article from ABC7 Eyewitness News posted about an hour ago is short and bitter:

Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Thursday voted to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.

It comes after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment and declined to answer questions at a hearing last week about his role in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reading it immediately reminded me of the 1992 movie A Few Good Men. This involved the court-marshal of a Navy colonel performed by Jack Nicholson. A Marine had died as a result of the colonel’s action, but the colonel was convinced that he would be found innocent on the basis of rank. Fortunately, the prosecuting attorney, a mere lieutenant performed by Tom Cruise, persisted in presenting the court with the hard facts. He was successful enough to back the colonel into a corner on the basis of the colonel’s own evidence, which led to Nicholson’s most famous explosive delivery: “You can’t handle the truth!”

Now that Cruise is older and somewhat more “seasoned,” perhaps he will be cast as Fauci struggling to invoke science and logic in order to make a point to Republican senators!
